Jesus’ Work in Heaven

Jesus Christ had a mission during His time on Earth. We have discussed this when we thought about the work Jesus did on Earth. Jesus has been in Heaven for the past 2000 years, and He is also fulfilling certain tasks there.

He is Preparing a Place for Us

1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.

John 14:1-3 (NIV

The reason why Jesus went to Heaven is to prepare a place for us; this is how He explained it to His disciples. A little house? Or a beautiful place at the banqueting table? We don’t know yet, but this we do know: what a beautiful and special place it will be!

Jesus is preparing this place for each of us individually, just like He will give each of us a new name. Let us live out the hope that He will come back and take us to be with Him forever in the place that He has prepared for us.

He Pleads for Us

14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Hebrews 4:14-16 (NIV)

Jesus is the supreme High Priest, and He is now carrying out this task in Heaven. He is the One who mediates between us and God. Who is better fit for this task than Jesus, our Savior?

This High Priest understands us better than we understand ourselves. He not only created us, but He also lived our lives and has been tested in everything that we have been tested in, and He never sinned. That makes Him ideally suited to advocate for us!

Therefore we may boldly approach the throne of the Father, without fear, without hesitation, and without embarrassment. Jesus Christ is there, and pleads for us! Thus we are sanctified in His presence, shaped and cleaned.

He Clothes Us

10 So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, the bad as well as the good, and the wedding hall was filled with guests.11 “But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. 12 He asked, ‘How did you get in here without wedding clothes, friend?’ The man was speechless.13 “Then the king told the attendants, ‘Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

Matthew 22:10-13 (NIV)

In this passage we read that the wedding guests are wearing a robe when entering the wedding hall. They are not allowed to enter without this garment. Jesus has clothed us with Himself! (Galatians 3:27) Therefore, we cannot have eternal life if we are not clothed with Christ.

Without being clothed by Christ, we will not have a place in Heaven, and He will not plead for us. The wrath of the Father does not pass, our sins not forgiven. Therefore, be reconciled with God and be clothed with Christ.
